Damned if you do damned if you don't-cant sound over ambitious or under ambitious-but still need to seem loyal to the company..?? any thoughts?

How do you answer the question-where do you see yourself in 5 years??

RE: Damned if you do damned if you don't-cant sound over ambitious or under ambitious-but still need to seem loyal to the company..?? any thoughts?
I hate that question! It makes me want to pull a crystal ball out of my pocket and start rubbing it and say, OH no! I'll be dead so hurry up and give me the job!" Or how about "Out in the gutter in a cardboard box." There are more where these came from, but moving on.........
In reality, here's a rough model of something I might say, "I believe in the shorter term. In one year(or two or whatever you feel comfortable with) I see myself as having fully demonstrated my knowledge and skill as a____________ (current position here), my ability to get the job done and established myself as the first name on the shortlist for a promotion."
The idea is to take the question and make it your own. Give an answer that shows a little ingenuity and control--but one you feel comfortable with.I think that question has to be recast in way that shows you are a thinking person, not a robot who tries to give the "right" answer. Classic stupid answer: "I want to be sitting in your chair"

Yah this question really is tricky. I do know someone who didnt get a second interview because he told them that he thought about opening up his own firm. He thought that would sound ambitious. I think you the best thing is just to hope to have gained more knowledge, learned from mistakes, and opened yourself up to new ideas-it doesnt necessarily have to be related to the job itself-just you as person.
